Penthouse in a church
Interior Design / Technical Design / Construction Supervision
The mix of modern interior, old vaults and appropriate decorations give the property a unique look and feel.
The church in the city centre of Utrecht was a poky little space. The characteristic vaults of the church building, which would only strengthen the unique atmosphere of the property, were hidden behind secondary ceilings long ago. Our ideas on this were clear from the outset: strip it all down and start over. The owner of the property couldn’t agree more. Her motto was: ‘Nothing is too crazy’.
The first phase consisted of removing both the secondary ceilings and inner walls, creating a single large space. And in doing so we also restored the view of the city centre of Utrecht on three sides. A second important decision was to add a ‘block’ with all necessary functions of a penthouse. Such a block is indispensable when you want to use all available space and includes bathroom, toilet and laundry and drying room. The left-hand side of the block is intended for the kitchen and the right side contains the bedroom. Even the space above the block has been used, by turning it into a comfortable guest room. The result after the radical refurbishment is a special and distinct vibe. The beautiful arched windows offer panoramic views of the Utrecht city centre. The mix of modern interior, old vaults and appropriate decorations give the property a unique look and feel.
